Pre-enclosure Maps

The pre-enclosure maps of English villages show the detailed breakdown of ownership and usage of land prior to the Enclosure Acts of the 19th Century. These maps predate the beginning of large scale mapping by the Ordnance Survey. The boundaries of the open field system date back many centuries, and often well before other surviving written records, so they contain useful clues to settlement patterns and land usage which are of interest to archaeologists.
